The Perfect Self-Tanning Routine – Everything I Use

Do not ask me to go into a spray tan booth…I will have absolutely no idea what to do. I made that mistake one time; half of my body was orange and half my body was white. It was a bad day to be me. I am quite fair, partially because that is just my complexion and additionally because nobody wants premature wrinkles! I love a good tan, but I absolutely do not want to look like an orange or have any transfer on my clothing or bedding (yuck)! I had just begun to embrace the pale when I came across this revolutionary product: Saint Tropez Purity Bronzing Water. 

You may wonder what sets this self-tanner apart from others. I have mentioned the Jergens mouse on P&P before. It has a great price point and it is not orange, but it transfers and only lasts for two to three days. I guess you get what you pay for! The Saint Tropez Purity Bronzing Water has no color guide, meaning a colored mousse does not come out of the bottle. The reason tanning companies put the color guide in the mousse is to help you see where you have put your self-tanner. That is the only downside to this self-tanner; you have to be very careful you so you do not miss a spot (worst case you can just go over it with self-tanner the next day). This self-tanner does not turn your sheets a disgusting brown shade or come off on clothing; it also smells like pina coladas on a sandy beach! The tan stays for about a week and does not come off in awkward patches (thank the Lord, no skin disease looking skin here)! Did I mention it does not even look the slightest bit orange on the fairest of skin tones?

The Self-Tanning Process

  1. Shave! It is important to have a fresh clean shave, this rids of any unnecessary texture and gives you a clean ¨canvas¨ for your beautiful tan.
  2. Exfoliate! I exfoliate everywhere, but I specifically focus on my feet, elbows, knees, and armpits. Make sure that your exfoliant does not contain oils, this will make it difficult for your self-tanner to adhere to your skin. I use Jo Malone Geranium & Walnut Body Scrub.
  3. Now, completely dry off and apply lotion to those problem areas: feet, knees, elbows, and hands. This helps to prevent patchiness and overly tanned body parts. I use Gold Bond Rough & Bumpy lotion. Any lotion will do, just make sure that it is not a lotion with heavy oils in it. Just like the exfoliant, this will prevent the self-tanner from being able to be absorbed into the skin.
  4. Now apply the self-tanner in circular motions with a tanning mitt. Make sure that you do not miss any spots. I always use what is left over on my mitt from doing my whole body to cover my hands and feet. I always want to use less rather than more. Our hands and feet are typically lighter than the rest of our body, so it makes sense to not self-tan that part of our body as much. This helps to make the faux tan appear much more natural.
  5. You can reapply the self-tanner as many times as you would like to build the intensity of the tan.
  6. Let the self-tanner dry for five to ten minutes before putting back on your clothes. I typically apply self-tanner before I go to bed and then I wake up looking as if I just returned from an exotic tropical vacation.
